Video Graphic Card Cooling

Vantec Iceberq 5 cooler

This section describes how to replace the heatsink / fan on a ASUS nvidia Geforce EN6600 GT video graphic card used with a ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mainboard fitted with a Zalman ZM-NB47-J heatsink cooling the nforce 4 chipset.

After a year of use, the fan on the ASUS nvidia Geforce 6600 video graphic card was making a bit more noise and a decision was made to replace it.  There are lots of possible replacements:

Passive Cooling - Just a heatsink. These keep the noise down to zero but are heavy and can therefore distort the card more that active cooling methods. They may also hang over one or more edges of the card and may get in the way of other components. You also need to have good air flow through the case, even if an external heatsink takes some of the heat outside the case.

Active cooling - Heatsink with Fan. They make some noise but not as much as the original heatsink / fan. Although heavier than the original, they are lighter than just a large heatsink.

The replacement chosen was a Vantec Iceberq 5 VGA Cooler. This is similar to the original in that it is a heatsink with a fan, but it is bigger, quieter and keeps the nvidia chip cooler. It does not hang over the edges of the card but like most of the passive and active cooling replacements it stands further off the card and so the adjacent PCI card slot cannot be used.
