Sankt Gilgen is in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, east of Salzburg - The Sound of Music country! There are a number of lakes in the Salzkammergut region, one of the largest being Wolfgangsee (or Abersee).  St. Gilgen is on the north-west side of Lake Wolfgang. The main road (158) passes on the edge of St. Gilgen so there is no through traffic. There are several villages around the lake - the main ones being St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut,  and Strobl am Wolfgangsee.

There are a number of shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels situated around the lakeside, Uferplatz and the two squares, Mozartplatz by the town hall & Kirchenplatz by the church.  Wolgang A Mozart’s mother was born in St. Gilgen as so there are lots of reminders around the village. Being on the lakeside, there are lots of water activities.

There are four museums, including an Music Instrument Museum (Musik Instrumente Museum) where you see and hear music instruments from around the world and hear them being played.

There are two Spar supermarkets, one in the centre and one next to the Information Office, and a Billa supermarket 5 minutes along the road from the Information Office. There are several Banks with ATM machines.
