Strobl am Wolfgangsee Resort Information

Strobl am Wolfgangsee is in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, east of Salzburg - The Sound of Music country! There are a number of lakes in the Salzkammergut region, one of the largest being Wolfgangsee (or Abersee).  Strobl am Wolfgangsee is on the south-east side of Lake Wolfgang. Both the main road, (158) from Salzburg and St.Gilgen to Bad Ischl, and the road to St. Wolfgang pass on the edge of Strobl so there is no through traffic. There are several villages around the lake - the main ones being St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut,  and St. Gilgen.

There are a number of shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels situated around the lakeside where there are lots of water activities.

There are two supermarkets, one in the centre and one on the main road. There are several Banks with ATM machines.

The Postalm hiking/ walking / skiing area is nearby.

Walking / Hiking in the Strobl Area

There are about 900 km of paths in the Wolfgangsee area ranging from level walks around the lake to mountain paths up to the summits of the surrounding mountains. The Tourist Office may offer free led walks.

The Tourist Information Office is in the village centre.

Airports (Flughafen)

The nearest airport is Salzburg which is about 40 km - 1 hour 10 minutes away from Strobl.

Rail Stations (Bahnhof) and Ferries

Trains are run by Austrian Railways ÖBB. Since the closure of the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn and the station at Strobl in 1957, the nearest train stations to Strobl are now in Salzburg 30 km west, and Bad Ischl 20 km east.

Ferries (Wolfgangseeschifffahrt - Wolfgangsee Ship Journeys) run from Strobl to St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang,  and several other places around the lake. They are run by the train company ÖBB. Wolfgangseeschifffahrt.

In St Wolfgang, there is a small cog railway that runs to the summit of the Schafberg mountain, Schafbergbahn.

Buses

There are a number of bus routes. The main one, route 150, “Der Ischler” runs between Salzburg, Fuschl, St. Gilgen, Strobl and Bad Ischl.

Buses do not run through the village. The nearest bus stop is near  the main road (Busbahnhof) at the old train station, where buses for St. Gilgen, Bad Ischl, St. Wolfgang and Postalm leave.

Cable Cars

There is one cable gondola in St. Gilgen that runs most of the year.

There are a number of lifts in the Postalm region south-west of Strobl.
