Sankt Gilgen is in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, east of Salzburg. There are a number of lakes in the Salzkammergut region, one of the largest being Wolfgangsee (or Abersee). St. Gilgen is on the north-west side of Lake Wolfgang. There are several villages around the lake - the main ones being St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut and Strobl am Wolfgangsee. The main road (158) passes on the edge of St. Gilgen so there is no through traffic. Other lakes nearby include Fuschlsee, Mondsee and Attersee.
